This Week In Writing, we explore writing during traumatic events and say goodbye to the best dog ever.

My wife and I unexpectedly had to say goodbye to our dog last weekend.

Mac was the best dog, a loving companion, and a fantastic coworker. He brought joy and happiness and never met a stranger.

Mac is greatly missed, and my office is too quiet without him. It’s been a tough week.

I found writing extremely difficult this week, and that includes this newsletter. So, I went to Twitter and asked for suggestions. Here’s what a few people said:

@justincox It’s a many page disaster but a necessary disaster. I allow myself to write: to crib and complain. The more I do it, the deeper I get into “why” I’m feeling what I’m feeling and I find, maybe not an answer, but I end up shedding light on my real feelings and what is causing it.

@justincox @WritingCoop Raw honesty. Bleed the ugly thoughts and feelings onto the page, let them breathe, then get to work making sense of it all.
