This Week In Writing, we explore inappropriate workplace dynamics and how that applies to writers.
If you’re a long-time reader of my newsletter, you know I like to talk about obscure holidays. Well, my friends, today is a weird one: National Hug Your Boss Day. I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and I can’t think of a single appropriate reason to hug your boss. Maybe you can? That said, it got me thinking about writers and those who work for themselves.
Most writers, whether full-time or hobbists, are their own bosses. We manage our schedules, provide accountability to goals, and manage payroll (when we can). In that regard, when was the last time you hugged yourself?
Admittedly, it’s still a strange question — this is just an odd topic all around. However, self-care is important, as is recognizing the many hats you wear as a writer. Writing would be very easy if that were the only part, but managing a writing business requires so much more time and effort than simply putting words on the screen.
